Kamala Harris
Kamala Devi Harris is an American politician. Born October 20, 1964, she was the 49th Vice President of the United States. She is the first woman to hold the vice presidency and the highest-ranking female official in U.S history. She is a member of Congress and a former US senator who represents California. Harris was born in Oakland and graduated from Howard University, University of California, Hastings College of the Law. She started her career with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office. Then she was recruited to the San Francisco District Attorney's Office. She was elected San Francisco district attorney in 2003. In 2010 Harris was appointed Attorney General of California and was re-elected in 2014. Harris was the junior member of the United States Senate from California from 2017-2021. Harris beat Loretta Sánchez in the 2016 Senate elections, becoming the second African American woman, and the first South Asian American, to be senator in the United States Senate. As a senator she advocated health reform, federal descholaring of cannabis, a path for immigrants who are not legal citizens as well as the DREAM Act and a ban on assault weapons. Harris also backed progressive tax reform. She gained a national profile due to her sharp questions of Trump administration officials during Senate hearings, including Trump's second Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, who was accused of assault on a woman.
